Website Accessibility

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, whatever their access needs.

This statement applies to the website at sterts.co.uk. It is run by Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre and its wholly owned subsidiary, Sterts Theatre CIC.

We want everyone who visits the site to feel welcome and to find the experience straightforward. That means you should be able to:

  • navigate most of the site using just a keyboard
  • skip straight to the main content from the top of every page
  • use it with a screen reader, including recent versions of NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver
  • zoom in to 200% without text spilling off the screen
  • read text against backgrounds that meet recognised contrast levels
  • choose reduced motion in your device settings and have animations respect it

We have also tried to keep the writing on the site as plain and clear as we can.

We believe most of the website meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at level AA. Some parts are not yet fully accessible, and we are working on them:

Content and services we do not control

Some parts of the experience are provided by other organisations and are outside our direct control. We cannot guarantee these meet WCAG 2.2 AA, but we choose partners with accessibility in mind and raise issues with them:

  • ticket sales, checkout and the box-office account area, provided by TicketSource
  • donations, provided by Donorbox
  • newsletter sign-up, provided by Mailchimp
  • the cookie consent banner, provided by CookieScript

Links to maps and directions take you to Google Maps or what3words on their own websites; we do not embed them in our pages.

Technical information about this website's accessibility

Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre is committed to making its website accessible, in line with the spirit of the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and our duties under the Equality Act 2010.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 level AA, because of the issues listed under "How accessible this website is" and the third-party content noted above.

What we have recently done

  • added a "skip to main content" link and a consistent, high-contrast keyboard focus outline
  • added on-screen confirmation and error messages to the venue-hire and support enquiry forms
  • marked every link that opens in a new tab, both visually and for screen readers
  • corrected the contrast of the "Free" event label
  • made dialogs trap and restore keyboard focus, and made animations respect the "reduced motion" setting

What we are still doing to improve accessibility

  • arranging a full manual and assistive-technology audit across all pages, including a keyboard-only walkthrough and testing at 320px screen width
  • raising outstanding issues with TicketSource, Donorbox, Mailchimp and our other suppliers

How we tested this website

The website was reviewed internally on 2 September 2026 by the team that builds and maintains it. Testing combined automated accessibility scanning with manual checks, including keyboard navigation, screen reader spot-checks, colour-contrast checks and reduced-motion behaviour. A full independent audit has not yet taken place.

We test the pages built from our own templates: the home page, What's On, About, Visit, Hire, Support, News and individual news articles, the 404 page, and our policy pages including this one.
