It’s a matter of life imitating art imitating life for Teylu’s Calendar Girls!
Teylu means ‘family’ in Cornish and this new community theatre company for adults is based in South East Cornwall, with performers from Cornwall and Devon.
Calendar Girls is a funny, uplifting and moving story about hope and the power of women’s friendships. The play by Tim Firth is based on the true story of WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the waiting area in the cancer ward at their local hospital. Teylu is proud that this production is raising money for the new Plymouth Radiotherapy Development Fund at Derriford Hospital, to enhance the patient experience there. This has become a very personal project - three members of the cast have been treated at the radiotherapy centre at Derriford in recent years. One of them has also been helped by Boost in Liskeard, who make breast forms. Boost is supporting this production of Calendar Girls by offering valuable free rehearsal space.
The play is being performed at Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre in Upton Cross on July 29 and 30, Devonport Playhouse in Plymouth August 1, Tavistock Town Hall August 7 and Launceston Town Hall August 14.
There’s a gala show at Sterts on July 30th with special guests including the radiotherapy team and Boost, plus tea and cakes and music from Liskeard Silver Band. The fundraising team has already been working overtime and it’s hoped a huge sum will be raised for the charity.
